Police and Domestic Violence

The problem of officer-involved domestic violence is longstanding.  In 1996, the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 made it unlawful for anyone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to possess firearms or ammunition.  The law has affected law enforcement agencies around the country, both as to applicants with such convictions in their pasts and as to officers already on the job who can no longer carry firearms because of their convictions.
